Case Studies - Naughty George
Chris
was contacted by a lady who had purchased a six year old
thoroughbred called George who was fairly green and asked to
go along and evaluate him. Within minutes of meeting him
Chris recognised that George was extremely tense and
distrustful of people.
The vet and chiropractor had confirmed that his anxiety
was affecting his whole demeanour and causing him to tense
his body and in particular the muscles in his back. His
behaviour was unruly and he was showing signs of extreme
fright, he was persistently trying to evade Chris' own
specially made rope halter. He spent around five hours with
George and this resulted in him allowing Chris to handle him
and build up a measure of trust. Chris arranged for George
to come and stay with us for a period of time. This could
have been anything from 5-12 weeks (each case is completely
individual - this is not a rule of thumb timescale).
When Chris returned to collect George it was evident that
George remembered his techniques and his trust was quickly
gained because of the earlier visit, he eventually calmed
enough to load him into the lorry. The owner was amazed that
after spending so much time loading him that Chris
immediately left with him. Chris explained that this was
important for George, he needed to be able to get on and off
with no problems- trust then began to biuld.
In order for the rider to achieve the same reassurance with
their ride it is neccessary to learn the whispering ways and
become soul mates with their horse. The horse then continues
to listen and build his courage and trust and relaxes
letting the rider become the director.
During his stay we also took George through many tests, to
mention a few; travelling in the horse box, walking around
horse shows, cross country courses including water (which at
first he was very unsure of), riding him in fields with
loose horses.
'The support we recieved from Chris has been
invaluable, you have definately helped us to understand
horse behaviour, thank you for giving us a safe horse to
ride'. 'George went very well was well behaved and got a
clear round'. |
